"I was patriotic to the core. I knew the hymn of every armed service and had my victory garden."

While the story of blacks in the Army is a fascinating one, we cannot forget about the fact that the last integrated US Army BEFORE Korea was the American Revolution. It was that bad. But Gail Buckley did a great job exposing that and giving a brief rundown of blacks in the military from the Revolution up to Desert Storm.

While it was a good book, the Rough-Riders segment (and the Spanish Civil War) was a bit boring for me. World War II and World War I, along with Vietnam, made up for it. (Remember Dorie Miller!)
