I decided to check out this series while waiting patiently for the next books from Rothfuss and GRRM. On the whole, the first book is bracing and enjoyable epic fantasy. While lacking the detailed exposition and background found in ASOIAF and the Kingkiller Chronicles, Abercrombie's trilogy kickoff is stylishly written and features well-drawn, three-dimensional characters. And unlike most epic fantasy protagonists - think budding heroes setting out on a quest - Abercrombie's characters are beaten up, broken underdogs trying to get by with their best days behind them. While the contours of the First Law world and its history remain too fuzzy one book in, I'm interested to continue reading.

Really enjoyable if you like this style. Game of thrones with a bit more humour would be my description and every character is horrible in the best ways.
