For a book the proposes to be about MJ's "last days", I would say over half of the book was filler and a rehashing of his life story, harking back to his childhood and Jackson 5 days. Misleading premise.

This was an interesting look at the troubled life of the "King of Pop" told against a backdrop of his final six months. You can't help but feel sorry for troubled souls like Michael Jackson. However, I feel like far too many celebrities in his situation take the attitude of "there's no way I could possibly be normal and/or healthy" and stop trying. The real tragedy here is that every medical professional who tried to stand up to him and tell him that using propofol to sleep was crazy/suicidal was instantly dismissed and replaced with the "yes men" who ultimately killed him (or really allowed him to kill himself). Not especially well-written or insightful, but not trash either.

Received this in a Goodreads giveaway. Thank you!

A few years ago I discovered Michael Jackson's music, and I enjoy some of his songs and watching some of his music videos. The events surrounding his life and death are definitely mysterious and misconstrued, and it was interesting reading more about him, his beloved children, the way he conducted his life, and of course, how much he loved music. I didn't know that he was even a lover of classical music, and that apparently he was an avid reader, even buying books for his three kids.

I thought that the writing in this was simple, but it still introduces you to the cast and characters of Michael Jackson's music and life. He is an icon of American music, and for all the stereotypes he broke along the way. Read this if you are even just the slightest bit intrigued by this musical legend.

Im incredibly disappointed in this book. While Smiley claims his "conjecture about the inner workings of Michael's mind is neither whimsical nor arbitrary," I found it distracting and damaging to the book. There was nothing new about Michael's life or death here. Skip it.
