This was a fun listen, and I appreciated the cameo appearances by members of the Star Trek TNG cast. I'm not sure I would have enjoyed it as much in print. As a TNG fan, this was full of nerdy goodness, and frighteningly believable. A good insight into the darker side of fandom.

Fan Fiction: A Mem-Noir Inspired by True Events by Brent Spiner is a humorous mystery thriller about an obsessed fan stalking the actor who played Data on Star Trek: The Next Generation. This was a quick, fun read, and I couldn't not read it in Spiner's voice. 

Brent starts getting ominous fan letters from someone claiming to be Data's fictional daughter, Lal from the Season three episode "The Offspring." It starts to ramp up when he receives a disturbing package. Finally when the FBI becomes involved, he hires a bodyguard. There is also a humorous side plot about his relationship with both the FBi agent and the bodyguard, who are twins. 

This book was hilarious. Even the serious parts are written with levity. I love how grounded in reality the story is. The characters in the book are real people, many of whom he worked with on TNG. It's hard to say what is truth about the people or the events. Some things are so outrageous they can't possibly be true, but you never know. 

Really this is an examination of fans and fan culture, and how easily someone can slide from being a serious fan to an obsessed one. This is a great read for any Star Trek fans (and specifically of Data and Brent Spiner) and also likes mystery and comedy.

This is a case where I think the audio is well worth an investment and adds a quality the print version cannot have. 

It’s hard to tell how much of this is based on truth and how much is fictionalized. Spiner delves into self deprecating humor while sharing life lessons he learned at a point in life while acting in Star Trek: The Next Generation. I truly a good bit of this story is highly exaggerated. In the end, it is a well told story that amuses me, wrapped in a mystery, with some deeper lessons to contemplate.
