There were some interesting worldbuilding elements to this book but I think the pacing was just off to me and also a lot of the plot points were ideas I'd seen before but done better? I also expected the heartfriend dynamic to be more powerful or intimate? Again, a dynamic I read a lot of, so I think my expectations for it are high. I think perhaps it was to it's determent that I read this after having recently read a bunch of things with similar tropes or premises. Might still check out the rest of the series to see what happens, but I don't feel desperate to do so.

I just reread this in preparation for revising Book 3, and everything I read should count for my GR challenge. So why the heck not just give it a little rating and review? Even years after finishing this book, I'm pretty dang proud of it.

Suggested for readers who like:
- epic fantasy, but with way more women
- deep friendships
- cultures clashing
- poetry
- characters generally trying to do some good
- some made-up curse words
