I found this so readable and couldn’t put it down at points. I love the character Idabel and the way he described the swampy landscape. It was mysterious and really reeled you in. Must read more Capote.
Graphic: Racism and Racial slurs
Moderate: Rape, Violence, and Sexual assault

Other Voices, Other Rooms made me feel unsettled and slightly afraid. Regardless, I enjoyed it. It is a very colorful novel full of the themes I adore the most: self-acceptance, terror of abandonment, and coming-of-age. Even the smallest of details within the novel are noteworthy. Capote manages to be simultaneously poetic and detached, developing an isolated and distorted mood that makes for an exhilarating read. While this gem of the Southern Gothic genre did not read like Capote's In Cold Blood, I enjoyed it, and I think it holds a lot of depth.

Waste of my time and makes me wonder how it ever got published.

Every other sentence seems to be a luminous description of the environment, sometimes so long and unwieldy that I felt mired in them, as in the stagnant swamps which form the foundation of this book. In such a place as this, historic horrors, the genocide of Native Americans, the enslavement of Black people, misogyny and homophobia must have their present manifestations both material and ghostly. Like the animals around them, nobody can escape their place in the world. As such, ironically, while the final sentences seem to posit 'Other Voices, Other Rooms' as a Bildungsroman, it seems that the only change for Joel is his acceptance of his own arrested development and the stagnation of his future alongside Randolph and the decaying American south.

I really enjoyed the beginning of this novel. I was excited about it, I highlighted lots of passages, beautiful words, curious mentions of strange things. Suddenly... I lost all interest, and it is shameful to admit how long it took me to finish this 170-page thing.
The middle and end was just too boring to carry on. I got tired of the prose and the lack of plot towards the end. It's like this could've been a great short story consisting of 100 pages MAX. That would be a 4-star rating.
As a first book, I forgive Capote for this. I am ready to read In Cold Blood, which is his best (apparently).
