A wonderful premise - supernatural intelligence unit in WWI - however the story itself dragged and wasn't as gripping as I had hoped it would be.

This book was phenomenal. The descriptions of war and emotional responses to it were… difficult to read while working through trauma. It hits some heavy emotional notes. Still, highly recommended.

Historical fiction isn't usually my favourite, but Kowal is really good at making it come to life! The central idea was really fun and I loved all the different story elements including giving representation to minorities that were an important part of the war effort and are often missed out. All the characters in the spirit circle were very distinctive and I loved all their interplay. The only characters that didn't feel very distinctive were Ginger and Ben who reminded me strongly of the main couple in the Lady Astronaut books. However that doesn't mean I didn't like Ginger & Ben, although Ginger's disregard for her own safety did have me a little frustrated at times!
