This was so good. I loved looking at the stupidity of teenager through an adult's eyes. So refreshing.
I liked the plot, liked the characters, loved the audiobook. I always like a female mc who swears.

This is surprisingly good book. I needed a break from long fantasy book and looking for short fast-paced book to read, so I picked up this book. Since the prologue, I cannot put the book down. After reading the Suneater, I feel that I like this type of storytelling more and more, where the main character recounts his/her story.

The story and relationship between Eskara and Josef was captivating. Even though there wasnt much going on in this book, i found myself enjoying my journey with Eskara very much. This has the feel of First Law first book where nothing happens and we just hang around with the main characters.

What surprise me the most is the humor. I found myself laugh out loud several times in this book especially the gambling part.

But what this book lack is the world building and the plot. I wish we get to explore more of the world as this book basically focus on the Pit and nothing else with very little explanation of the magic system. The whole of book 1 feels like an introduction to the story only. I truly hope we will get to explore more in the following books.

SO MUCH POTENTIAL!!

I think the perspective of the story is cool. Eska is telling us about the things that have already happened and drops little hints along the way. I loved the little hints to future situations. I like the actual storyline and will continue the series BUUUUUUUT man was this so repetitive!!?-?-?/‘bvs

Every chapter felt like it was the exact same thing being TOLD to me. There were so many flashback chapters to the academy which were also ALL THE SAME!! The author kept over explaining and telling us things rather than letting us discover through the actions of the characters. So much more action could have taken place in this first book!!!!!

******SPOILER******

The eska/isen “sex” scene was disgusting and I hated it…..

it was a fun read, certainly not a happy one though. the world building is where this book shines but don’t underestimate the characters. all feel like genuine people that have their flaws, even the main character. this book definitely acts as a setup for the rest of the series — as all first books should be — and still leaves you with more questions that answers.

Loved Eska! She’s a badass character with anger issues. I loved the unique magic and how it was all explained. You could feel the emotions throughout this book as if they were your own. Anger, hate, betrayal, sadness.
Highly recommend this book!

This was great! Is it weird that I found such a dark book so funny? Who knows, but it was very funny at times

My first Rob J Hayes book. I've been following the author for a while (he has a monthly newsletter that showcases recently self-published fantasy titles) but I'd always been too nervous to try his books, as I worried that the grimdark vibe wouldn't work for me. Fortunately narrative draws you in, as the narrator is telling the story after the event and keeps dropping intriguing crumbs about what is to come. Looking forward to continuing this series.
