An interesting reflection on the roots of feminism and the struggles that women (especially women of color) face. I really enjoyed each individual story, but there were a lot of characters to keep track of and I found myself having to flip back to determine their connections.

This book of short stories is well written. Some characters are likable, some are not, and some will grow on you. The author, Bernadine Evaristo writes separate, multi-chapter stories around a variety of protagonists whose lives are intertwined as neighbors, friends, lovers, family, colleagues and coworkers. This book covers the lives of both black women, both native and immigrant to Britain. The novel is primarily set in London but also covers stories and personal histories set in other countries. The author tackles heavy topics including racism, sexism, abuse, infidelity, adoption, classism, abortion, crime, sexuality and gender. It is a novel about finding oneself, making one’s way, and coming of age at any age. Both enjoyable and heartbreaking, I highly recommend.
