I plan on rewatching all the movies before the new entry comes out in May, and I figured it would make sense to read the book. I was fairly disappointed in this until about the final half, which redeemed itself.

There's certain plot points I think the original film explored and explained better than the book, such as Taylor/Ulysse speaking to the apes. Somehow, also, Ulysse is somehow more unlikable, arrogant, and creepy than Taylor is in the movie?? Didn't think that possible, but here we are.

I knew going in that
in the book they are not revealed to have been on Earth the whole time, but this certainly has an equally compelling twist ending

Something I wish was explored more is the element of colonialism, which gets some lip service near the end, but ultimately is not a large part of the story. Rather, the book succeeds in drawing analogues to human treatment of animals.

I liked it for the most part

This book was so much better than I was expecting.

Yes, the science and the sexism and the racism hasn't aged great, but it isn't nearly as sexist, racist, and outdated as other Sci Fi novels from the same time.

The story is focused on showing the humanity in others, even in non-humans. It holds up a mirror for our treatment of non-human creatures, one that is still effective today.

While the world it creates is dated, the way the world is presented and the story unfolds are so pleasant that I wasn't bothered by the old-fashioned elements.

This book is a Sci Fi classic with good reason.
