I received an e-book from Arvyn and Anvil Publishing in exchange for an honest review. Thank you so much!

Salingkit is a fine coming-of-age YA novel. It is actually a 1986 diary of Kitty or, Goro, to her friends, and her story during the year of People Power.

I like Salingkit for it has a good storyline. Despite the fact that it reads like a typical YA novel, I can't deny that this book sparks interest and affects me somehow on emotion department.

To be honest, I can't really formulate the right words to review this book. I like it but I will probably forget about it after a some time. What I really liked though and possibly I won't forget, is the introduction of this book. The little history lessons and summary that gives additional knowledge which are truly helpful.

an informative book that thoroughly brushes through the goings on during the marcos government in the mind of a 14 year-old, kitty “goro” eugenio.

if you wanted a more detailed information during the martial law and the people power, this book would mildly provide you that. this book is a version of the philippines’ tragic history in the lens of a teenager—in short, it’s dumbed down.

was this a good resource? yes. the introduction provided a comprehensive lesson from around the beginning of marcos’ regime up to noynoy’s before shifting to kitty’s fictional story. goro’s progression as a character is passable, there wasn’t any dramatic turnaround but you shouldn’t expect one from a fourteen year-old.

i learned a lot, this book added a bit of color to the black and white hue of what i’d always associated under a marcos government; it was dark, yes. but it was also hopeful; salingkit: a 1986 diary focused on the hopeful part. this book had a lot of pop references during the year—i had not even known that a band called depeche mode was famous, least of all existed.

this was one of the books i looked forward to reading this year.
