‘But nothing on this earth’s guaranteed, when you get right down to it, you know? I’ve been thinking about that. About how your kids aren’t really yours, they’re just these people that you try to keep an eye on, and hope you’ll all grow up someday to like each other and still be in one piece. What I mean is, everything you ever get is really just on loan.’

oh i loved this so muchh
okay we read this for my english class and i have to say i wasn't expecting that much? the last few books we've read have been kind of meh (with the exception of the alchemist which i really loved, but it was still very heroes' journey focused, which isn't my favorite).
oh but this. this was incredible.
the story is really character driven, one of the things that warmed me to it instantly. there's not a single character here i didn't love, and that says something. i love taylor's spunk, she's such a well-written character. her naivete and assertiveness are really well balanced, and she grows so much as an individual.
and that's another thing!! all of the characters' grow because of each other. lou ann (who i love love love) becomes more assertive while also not losing her worrywart nature, and taylor learns that it's okay to rely on others. esparanza and estaban aren't just reduced to "the immigrant characters", they have growth and wants and depth that made me cry. so. much.
turtle is a delight. enough said.
the ending!! tears. so many tears and feels and warm fuzzies. GOD. i love the found family in this so damn much.
so yeah, this book wrecked me in a good way and i would highly recommend
