The SpoilerEMP camel near the end felt like a Deus Ex Machina. The SpoilerEMP Camel could at least have been alluded to earlier, though I don't think she was. Rex Spoilerunleashing the plague early was a bold move in the narrative. The belties were subtly terrifying. Something about them really brought to mind A Wrinkle in Time, which was surely intentional.
Graphic: Death
Moderate: Slavery
Minor: Body horror
A sympathetic, reasonably well-developed nonhuman character dies onscreen in a distressing way, but it's not realistic (the character turns to dust). I am marking the element of the belties as slavery even though it's not exactly equivalent to real-life slavery. The element of the belties, the villain's plan and its scope, and the fact the villain is already partly successful is what makes it dark, despite its lighthearted elements.
