Ok, ok... I was on my toes for the last 100+ pages, even though I figured out what was going on halfway through the book, but hey.. a good legal thriller nonetheless. 3.75⭐️

A 2.5 for me. Pretty average. Won't recommend but if you love thrillers and have nothing to read you might opt for this.
In the beginning, I felt this is going to be an amazing book but it doesn't live up to the expectations. On the contrary, the second half is slightly monotonous and predictable for a thriller.

I have to confess to reading only some of this book. I get bored with your stereotypical predatory journalists and your asshole vindictive detective bosses. Also, I didn’t want to read about the inevitable aggression towards the dogs in the story either.

So I jumped to the last four chapters and gleaned the storyline. Yes, formulaic but still toothy given the twists. And I always appreciate skillful, intelligent women.

Wow! Some twists kept me guessing till the end, and even after the killer was known still unexpected twists. Should and could have read in less time, fast paced page-turner, very highly recommended and a solid 5 stars. As I do not care for lawyers I will not read his other series, but the .5 novella "The Academy" and the next book in the series "Her final breath" are already on my Kindle.
Have recommended this to my mother as the german translation was available cheap for a short time. Got this cheap in english as well, but had in my big virtual TBR-pile for 8 months.

In this book Police detective Tracey Crosswhite wants to find out what really happened to her missing sister 20+ years ago in 1993. Yes - someone is in jail for her murder, but the body was never found. And now Detective Crosswhire finds some of the investigation suspicious and believes the wrong person is in jail leaving her without answers.

I felt like this was a solid mystery/suspense book. And I especially liked that it had a resolution at the end. But I’m still intrigued enough to have downloaded the next book in the series.

It picked up a lot in the last 15% or so, but up to that point I was just bored. I thought the plot moved far too slowly. It didn't help that the resolution tipped into territory that drives me nuts due to one of my personal pet peeves about the way many mystery and suspense novels end.
