Very enjoyable. I’m reading Sayers’ mysteries out of order for some reason, but it doesn’t seem to affect the pleasure I take in them. There’s something powerfully affirming about the fact that, not only does Dorothy Sayers write good female characters, but she writes Peter Wimsey so he sees and values these women as friends and three dimensional human beings.

I like how the relationship between Wimsey & Parker became more fleshed out in this story. We've always known they were great friends, but the rift that came between them (temporary, but the effects wouldn't be forgotten easily) was naturally done. For the first time Wimsey couldn't see his friend, but a lawman, and Parker's obvious hurt at this brought a new dimension to their interaction. Subtle, but effective!

I felt the ideas about women a little heavy-handed though... but I wouldn't know what women of that era went through, since they were just discovering their freedom and independence, and perhaps the ladies of the era were drunk on the new concept - something many women of this era take for granted!
