Such a wonderful tale of feminism, resilience, coming of age, and making the hard decision to choose yourself without regret. I really appreciated how the author tackled touchy subjects for younger readers - the oppressive machismo of her surroundings, abusive family dynamics, the danger of simply existing as a woman, but also the relationship with the love interest. I also really liked the cadence of the narrator’s voice, but was annoyed by several mispronunciations

I loved the last half of the book, there was more futbol, more exploration of the challenges Camila is facing (family, relationships, career dreams), all while shedding light on the day-to-day for women in Argentina. 

It is terrifying to see the trend of missing women show up in multiple countries, though not surprising. Having recently read more about Argentina's history, it was interesting to see the ways things have shifted (in positive ways), though still lag behind in others. This story feels, at its heart, a love letter to these women (those still here and those not), celebrating their continued dreams and ambitions, pursuing them even at risk to their lives and agency. 

This is a profoundly hopeful story, even as oppression and other horrors are detailed here. Do check the content warnings (only one scene). 

Do recommend it - it's a slow burn, as it spends too much time on the romantic relationship with Diego for the first half. But once he leaves, the story opens up and it's definitely worth your time.

Futbolera Camila Hassan has to hide her participation in the sport from her family, despite her father's futbol obsession, and her brother's potential as a possible pro player. With her family unable to look past the traditional gender roles in their Argentine barrio, Camila must practice in secret, and cover up her participation in the sport with elaborate lies.

Complicating things is the return of Diego, her teenage crush who found success as a pro player for one of the top teams in Italy.

Steeped in the details of daily life in the barrio, and shining with a love of the "Beautiful Game", this story did a nice job of transcending the standard sports narrative, to present a tale of hope is a setting where girls routinely suffer from denial of opportunities, abuse, and murder. In her identity as Furia, Camila embraces the call for freedom and justice that so many of her peers have been denied.

I loved the attention to detail in the setting, and the complex character backgrounds that set up the story, and the main character's self-confidence was a great distinguishing feature.

I'd say this is closer to a 2.5. It was just boring. It tackled some feminist themes that are important and should be talked about, especially with the younger generations, but I'd have to stay engaged long enough to do it first.
