love the art style so much, as well as the storyline with Bee & her mom, but didn't really care for the main plot

Read for PRC
Graphic novel, not at all what I was expecting. Well written, brilliantly illustrated. New twist on the Peter Pan story.

This was really cute and well-executed. A couple plot twists I didn't see coming too!

Content warnings: death, violence, blood, injury, bullying, mentions of school shootings, child death (in the past)

This was the CBCA Older Reader's winner last year and for some reason, I never quite warmed to it. But I was trying to read a truly ridiculous number of books in January and in desperation at the end of the month, I borrowed a bunch of graphic novels from the library, including this.

And it was delightful.

I loved the concept, and while it was definitely more...comic book-y?...than I anticipated (which makes perfect sense, given the authors), the characters were delightful and I really enjoyed the way the story played out. That being said, I would happily read a dozen more books in this world because it was just FUN.

Peter Pan is gone and a new world has grown, Otherland. Neverland is falling, in a war against Otherland, as the adults try to steal the heart of Neverland. Can Paco convince Bee and her found family to be the new Lost Ones?

Neverlander’s by Tom Taylor and Jon Sommariva is a graphic novel reimagining of the life after Peter Pan. It focuses on the importance of family and friends, found family and support systems, honesty, trust and happy thoughts. With a foul-mouthed Tinkerbell, a disheartened runaway, grumpy adults and the overwhelming cute, Gracie, Neverlanders will leave you laughing out loud, gasping in shock, feeling warm and fuzzy and feeling angry throughout. Captured through amazing illustrations by Jon Sommariva, this novel takes you on a journey from train stations and trailers to Neverland at war, culminating with the full utopia of Neverland on display. Just stunning!

**Thank you to NetGalley and Penguin Teen for the eARC in exchange for an honest review of this title. This in no way changed my rating**

I love Peter Pan retellings, so I was interested in this title. Neverlanders is a found family story about a group of orphans who end up in Neverland, waging war against pirates and goblins. Peter Pan has gone missing, the lost boys are dead, and this new group of lost ones is here to save Neverland.

To start with, I was very intrigued by the diverse cast of characters included. Neverland, despite being a refuge for "lost" children, in general, is usually pretty melanin-deficient. So it was nice to see a cast of characters that is more reflective of the children of the world. I will say, I was let down by one character because I immediately knew what was going to happen with them. It's a common trope, but it was a little frustrating to continue to see.

The other thing I really enjoyed was the "twist" characterization of characters we love and expect from Neverland. Tinkerbell shows up quite a bit as a fairy with face paint and a shaved head. She's characterized as a sailor-mouthed war general, which I haven't seen before. I liked it a lot. I won't get into the other two because I don't want to spoil anything, but the other expected characters are there and similarly had unique characterizations for this story.

I enjoyed it, for the most part. The one character just kind of disappointed me and it felt like they were let off pretty easy for what happened. Overall, an interesting retelling of Peter Pan that I could see many readers enjoying.

Disclaimer: I received and eARC of this book through Edelweiss. Thank you to the publisher, author and illustrator, and Edelweiss.
I love that it's a dark story but uses bright colours instead of more subdued shades. The mini twist at the end was also a nice touch to show the evolution of a beloved place and characters and how everyone can grow and change.
I will be purchasing this for my library's YA collection.
