I liked this and it kept me engaged however I needed a little more depth to round it to a four star read. I enjoyed the overall plot but was more interested in Ava and the world building (especially the whole backstory with Caspian's father, mate bonds and her immediate family which was really interesting) than the rockstar plotline although that first chapter was really good. I liked the siren/lead singer parallel but the whole band dynamic was just odd (frenemies at best) and two of the band members barely getting a mention. This could have just been Brandon and Mattias following them instead and it wouldn't have taken anything away. Ava was a little frustrating with her attitude to the supernatural but I'm hoping she starts to embrace it soon.

Jay Adler absolutely made this book for me; his deadpan delivery of Mothman added a lift to the story at just the right time. Mothman is a bit creepy but it just works. The drawings did make me laugh. Gregory Salinas' Caspian was just the right amount of possessive and vulnerable with Michelle Price rounding out the cast with a solid performance.

There were a few plot threads I wanted to know more about which I suspect may be picked up in later books in the series (the weird splinter from that creepy house and the very convenient photography job being a couple) and that is enough to keep me invested in reading more of the series.

My interpretation of the star system;
3 stars - I enjoyed it; would read the author again
4 stars - I really liked it; I am invested and definitely want more from this author/series
5 stars - I loved it; I engaged with this book completely until I finished it and it is one I will re-read

honestly a pretty interesting story so far. a little confusing but i’m curious to see how the story unravels in the next two books

so far my fav character is moth man. he has slight caveman tendencies just like the other hero. moth man feels this soul deep attraction to the fmc but the other hero gets very possessive because he knows she is his mate. the end of the book leaves off where moth man and the fmc are finally getting a little bit closer but the other hero still hates moth man.
also moth man can only communicate through asl since he doesn’t want to cause the heroine pain. in order for him to speak he has to convey messages through someone else’s head and it’s very painful to be on the receiving end. the heroine doesn’t know asl so they use a notebook to communicate.
fav quote from moth man:

“I swallowed nervously, hoping Ava would make it out of this alive and okay. I couldn’t let her die. This thing with her was serious. I didn’t just want to fuck the girl. I wanted to carve our names in a tree and ask her to go steady. I wanted to be close enough that if she was already on the toilet when I had to go, she’d open her legs wide and let us piss in the bowl together. That was the type of relationship to aspire to.”

i’m excited to see how the dynamic of this relationship plays out especially since we haven’t met all of the harem members.

safety:
one of the heros is a virgin (he waited for the heroine) i don’t think the heroine is a virgin. the other hero (we’ve only met two so far) hasn’t had sex in centuries
no OW/OM drama

3.5/3.75 - Had no idea what I was getting into lol. Monster - tentacle sex. Because apparently that’s a thing.

While there definitely is monster sex - it’s a slow burn with low

Out of all the Beatrix books I have read to this date, this one took a little bit of reflection to understand how I felt about it. I thought the Horror elements were really well done, I actually think this would be a super fun "Spooktober" read. And I absolutely loved Caspian. He was absolutely batsh*t delulu and I loved him. The overall vibe of this book was well done and I am eager to see how the story develops even further in the next installment.

Edit for read #2, and not much to add! I still love the book, the writing, the character building, and the story. I'm excited to continue on in the series, with a re-read of book 2, then book 3, which I haven't read yet.

I am a Beatrix Hollow fan! The first book of hers I read was "Cute but Psycho," and it was awesome, so I decided to check out more of her work.

Run & Hide is the first in the Myths & Monsters series and is available on Kindle Unlimited, so I decided to go with it. I haven't read much of this genre, so I wasn't sure what to expect. This is a fun one, with some fascinating creatures. We meet Ava and her family, which consists of her mom, a medium, and her aunt, a celebrity ghost hunter. And she is reuniting with her ex-stepbrother, Caspian. He is also obsessed with her.

She wants nothing to do with the family business and is embarking on a lone nature photography business. Caspian is the lead singer of Nix, and the band is about to go to the next level of fame until he decides to come with her.

Lots of fun times ahead, or not so fun, I guess you should say, lol. We have a water creature with tentacle peens, a monster covered in fur, and two glowing red eyes. With some banter, some violence, and even some murder, what more could you ask for?

I give it a solid 4-star rating, and I will certainly read more after I finish this series.
