Great Book! I loved seeing and hearing about some of my favorite characters from the Night Huntress series. This was a great story with plenty of love and excitement but also some sadness. I am super excited that it felt like I might get Ian's story at some point!

Quick Summary: A new layer of mystery

My Review: Into the Fire by Jeanine Frost was both intriguing and confusing. There was a new layer of mystery added to V and L's story. Magic, vampires, witches, demons, guards, and new friends and relatives were featured. Key villains took center stage, although they remained vague throughout. Particularly creative was the inclusion of Egyptian mythology in this installment. This reader was not expecting that.

I feel like peoples reviews of this book are wayyyyyyyy tooo harsh on this book. Like they were expecting something unbelievable and they got the Game of Thrones series finale. It was solid through all four books. Jeaniene does not deviate from her formula because it works. You get action. You get a little relationship drama and then the solid splash of romance.

If you like the other books in this series, you’ll like this one. Don’t let the negative reviews sway you.

Into The Fire picks up where Bound By Flames left off. Leila and Vlad are trying to track down Mircea, Vlad’s batshit crazy nephew/step son with major Daddy issues. After trying unsuccessfully to murder her, Mircea did manage to accidentally magically bind himself to Leila (flesh to flesh and blood to blood and all that jazz) so that whatever happens to one of them also happens to the other.

It’s all fun and games with Mircea periodically involving Leila in a joint session of angsty self mutilation and telepathic whining about Daddy until someone tries to put a heart out. But it isn’t Mircea who almost really kills Leila; it’s whoever kidnapped him and tries to use Leila as collateral to get Vlad to do their bidding. Now that it’s more important than ever to break Mircea’s spell, Vlad asks Mencheres for help and Mencheres offers up the assistance of Ian as their guide to the secret underworld where magic reigns.

I’ve really enjoyed the first 3 books in the Night Prince series, so I’m not entirely sure what didn’t work for me here. There wasn’t a lot of relationship “stuff” going on; Vlad and Leila are a firmly established couple. I like their absolute and single minded devotion to each other and I get their need to protect the other at all costs even if it isn’t always the best approach in real life. They’re both well intention-ed control freaks. The characterization of Ian was a definite disappointment. I remember thinking that he had leading man potential; and I know I’ve commented on more than one occasion that I was looking forward to his finally getting his own book. And now….I’m not so sure why. One of us changed and I’m pretty sure it’s him. The Ian in Into The Fire is there for (not quite that funny) comic relief. He comes off as a buffoonish court Jester. I found myself feeling embarrassed for him. I do believe his romantic interest is announced at book’s end (if anyone still cares).

My biggest issue with Into The Fire is that the plot periodically stalled. It didn’t consistently hold my interest and I found myself frequently bored. And then things would pick up, and then I was bored – wash, rinse, repeat. I think maybe the story and characters have run their course; although it’s clear there’s still more to come – and a Maximus/Gretchen pairing seemed to be hinted at for some future date. I’m going with 2 ½ stars – but I can’t bring myself to round up.
