"We all know that blessings have a curse waiting on the other side of them."

I get nervous with the middle books in a trilogy. My experience is that they tend to be a long and boring bridge to get from point A to point C. I think Hearne found a way to keep interest in this one though. By answering some mysteries, flirting with others, and adding some new things to puzzle on. He continues to flex his excellence in writing.

Hearne also startled me sometimes with his grasp of grief and guilt, of duty and PTSD. It's honest and revealing, not only of the characters, but us humans. However, there a few balls in the air that seem perhaps too idealistic, particularly politically. It's a sharp contrast from the first books lack of anything going ideally, so I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop in the finale. Can't wait to see where the journey ends.

Thanks to Netgalley for giving me an ARC in exchange for an honest review!

CW: general violence and political intrigue

What a follow-up to the first book!

I don't want to say too much, but it follows some of the same characters as the first book, as well as adds in new perspectives of characters that were on the side in A Plague of Giants and completely new ones. The book expands on the world that was already given. You learn more about the Bone Giants, the Kennings, and some new worlds. Believe me, there were times when I was completely shocked and I still am amazed by this world!

It's such a unique book and it's high fantasy that I can really enjoy. Told by a bard who can summon up the looks of different people, he takes you through this war and gives knowledge from around the world. All of the events have already happened, but it's the first time people are hearing the cohesive story. Yet, it's still very fast-paced and it's on the story. It's a large book, but it's all direct and matters rather than a bunch of wandering around.

Believe me, I'm dying when I remember that the final book in this series will probably take another few years to see the light of day!
