absolutely SOBBING MY EYES OUT OVER THIS ONE. the plot was standard, but the character work, particularly in the last ten minutes with c'rizz's death, the rebirth of the world and charley's outburst, followed by simply: "take me home." also i will never be over 'you gave me the gift of time', because the double meaning in that is murderous. also seeing a darker side to eight again, cyclically looping back through the scherzo..... beautiful. tragic. arghggh.

C'rizz is easily in my top 10 companions of all time, and so, to have a sendoff like this, where things go so intensely wrong, is brilliant. He is evocative of other companions, like Donna, Adric, and Bill . I adore him as a character, and so, for the writers to take a risk like this, and to have him not only serve as basically the primary antagonist , but also for him to die in such a horrible way is really, really striking. It made me really sad, but it was also an excellent piece of writing, and leads so wonderfully into the next story, The Girl Who Never Was.

Robert Glenister was brought in as Selateen in The Caves of Androzani to help kill off Peter Davison, and here he is brought in to help dispose of Conrad Westmaas as C'rizz. Given that C'rizz is a reformed psychopathic killer reptilian, we always knew what the end was likely to be, and indeed the story is rather better on the Doctor/Charley relationship, where she accuses him of reminiscing about how things were better before C'rizz joined them (though in my humble opinion, if this is the Doctor's view, he is right). Still, C'rizz manages to go out with a bang.

The Eighth Doctor is the nicest one simply to listen to, which bumps this up to four stars, but otherwise this kind of heavily allegorical trap-door for a character that never seemed to gel is merely ok. The that at the end is the only really interesting thing about it.
