This is my first read of Dan Brown's book. I got this one from a small book rental near my school, which I hadn't know until my 3rd year there. I'm interested in this book because I liked computer and programming, as well as I understand a bit about cryptography.

The idea is clear, Digital Fortress is about a defense system on a computer. But actually, it's just an encryption algorithm that's impossible to decode. Contrary to Begofsky principle, which said no encryption is mathematically unsolvable. Guess what? There's no Begofsky principle in the real world. I tried to google it but everything I found about Begofsky came from this novel, haha.

The tension in this book is so dense that I had to read it real quick. The short length of chapters help me a lot, I like this kind of books. I love the complexity of the plot, but what I think had missing is, the moral of the story. Yes, it is an adventure of a hero and a heroine fighting to survive and solve something. And so what? Their motivation is duty, not love. And there are no significant moral value on it.

The characterization is nice, but I hate the idea of a respectable person turned into a villain. Well, that's a spoiler. Oops. I

It's a fun book, not the best of Dan Brown's texts, but fun none the less.

What I Did Like:
+Strange how well the technology held up! I was nervous because this one was published in the late 90s but it still felt relevant.
+The mystery is wonderful. You are immediately sucked into the story, wondering who is responsible and how it all comes together.
+I didn’t have it all figured out. There were questions and twists that intrigued me and kept me interested. There were things I didn’t predict.

Who Should Read This One:
-I would love to get the opinion of a tech person on this one!
-Readers who like high stakes, fast paced mysteries that read like puzzles.

My Rating: 4 Stars
Overall, this one brings an intensity that the genre demands and will please readers of thrillers.

It gets three stars because Dan Brown does a good job with the Intrigue,
and does a passable job of describing some real crypto and real crypto problems,
and his drop-box and dead man's switch is pretty good.
The ending however, is totally silly.
