From the Grammy nominated folk singer and songwriter, an inspiring exploration of creativity and the redemptive power of song
I won this book for free from a Goodreads giveaway in 2021 but I decided to listen to it on audio. It’s narrated by the author. Each chapter is named after her songs and then she sings them at the end of each chapter. In my opinion, this book was okay but not great. Before reading this book, I never heard of Mary. I didn’t know who she was and I never heard her music. This was my first time hearing her music in this audiobook. This book was well written and I liked the chapter where she talked about the songwriting workshop she did with the veterans. She’s a great songwriter but I don’t like her music. I would have to listen to her music a lot in order for it to grow on me because her music is different and I don’t usually listen to folk music. Would I recommend this book? People who are fans of her music will enjoy this book. If you haven’t heard of her or haven’t heard her music then you might not like this book.

Excellent memoir. Each chapter is a story. They start with lyrics to a song that is relevant to the story in some way. The audio version ends with Mary actually performing the song. I loved that addition!
Mary's life was not simple or easy. She spends time in the book being very open and honest about her journey, her pain, and her healing. Well worth your time.

Loaned to me by a friend. By the end I was bawling like a child. Music. Empathy. Storytelling. Healing. Beautifully told.

Beautiful descriptions of her life and songwriting journey. Really enjoyed listening to the audiobook and hearing her play her songs.

Absolutely incredible, heart-wrenching, and moving. I am not a songwriter, or a writer of any kind. Still, I found this to inspire me to write. To tell stories. To tell truth. [a:Mary Gauthier|7163342|Mary Gauthier|https://s.gr-assets.com/assets/nophoto/user/u_50x66-632230dc9882b4352d753eedf9396530.png]'s biographical writing here is just as jaw-dropping as her songwriting. I loved the audiobook that included full songs; however I will be adding the physical book to my collection to pour through and highlight. There is so much that I want to revisit again and again. Thank you, Mary, for your truth and your power.
