I enjoyed this collection a lot, especially with Tim Drake’s return as a regular member of the cast. James Tynion shows off his love and deep understanding for the entire cast and the “Bat Family.” I think my favorite issue is the last that serves as a eulogy for Clayface. Making Clayface a heroic character and his arc within this series was a risky play that pays off. His deep friendship with Cass is unexpected but works so well. If there’s any flaw in this series, it’s that the cast is so good and full of so much potential, it’s difficult to give them all they’re due. That’s one of the greatest challenges of the comic book format.

There’s some weirdness in here from Rebirth tie-ins, including the stupidity of Mr. OZ, and I don’t entirely love Tynion’s take on Tim and Steph… but a lot of this is pretty great. His use of Anarky (a character I usually loathe) to bring back the First Victim really works, and the tension between a driven Tim Drake and Batwoman is really interesting. I’m also a sucker for legacies and dark futures, so even if this Tim doesn’t entirely ring true for me, I can’t deny it’s interesting.

It’s the Clayface stuff that really works, though, taking a mostly brutish villain and giving him that same sense of tragedy that Two-Face, Mr. Freeze, and all the best Batman villains have.

One of the most enjoyable recent Batman runs. This stuff was especially hard hitting. A great look inside some of his renowned supporting cast with vibrant, blockbuster art.
