A board book that introduces the concepts of race and anti-racism to young children.

The material is presented in an age-appropriate way, with a note to adults on the best ways to share the book with children.

This book opened up some really great conversations with my 4 year old about race. A lot of other books on this topic have been over her head/not interesting to her.

I really appreciate how this book gets explicit (in a simplified yet sharp way) about how white people constructed white supremacy ("A long time ago, way before you were born, a group of white people made up an idea called race...."). Most of the board books I've read are about the experience of difference, and I really appreciate how this one page of the book introduces systemic racism--and as someone else mentioned here, this page in the book can serve as an introduction to conversations about eugenics. Also, the book includes powerful examples of micro (and macro) aggressions that are common in daycare and elementary school.

I enjoyed the art work in this book and thought the beginning of the book was great. It talked about the differences in skin color, where they can be observed (even within our own families), what we love about our skin color, and a very rudimentary scientific explanation about where it comes from. Half was through the book it takes a turn and starts on some of the history of behind groups identified by their skin color. While the information is accurate, it takes on a very one-sided view of racism and where all of the blame lies, which is why I gave it such a low rating. I realize this is a basic, conversation starting book, but putting all the blame on the white race is inaccurate.

4.5, I didn't enjoy the art style as much in this one. Content wise, this entire series is 5 stars!

Great book on a really important topic. It breaks it down very well. I wish it was a picture book rather than a board book though.

This is a great intro conversation with your kid about race. It starts out very kid book like with simple sentences and lots of reflection from the reader and then BAM it just dives right into it. The text then gets a little more complex, so I definitely would recommend reading this one together and using the additional back matter and definitions to help support your child’s understanding of the text. The artwork is pretty, colorful, and simple, working great with the book as a whole.

This is one of those books that makes me think "WOW! I can't believe this is an $9 board book". What a great little book, perfect for introducing tough concepts and difficult conversations to your little ones.
