As soon as I heard that one of my fave authors Casey Plett is featured in AFTER REALISM: 24 Stories for the 21st Century Edited by André Forget I knew I had to read this book! Then I found out that another of my fave authors John Elizabeth Stintzi has a story in this book too so I was really eager to get my hands on this book.
.
As soon as I received this book in the mail I started reading it right away. All of these stories are amazing!! I loved this book! Since last year short stories has been one of my fave genres especially CanLit stories and from 2021 until now I’ve read 30 single authored short story collections but this is my first story anthology! I love how this book showcases 24 different ways of how stories can be. They’re all unique and fantastic in their own way. I really enjoyed an aspect in every single story and I loved the whole journey.
.
Forget’s introduction discusses CanLit and publishing with refreshing insight and I love how he brought together stunning talent in these pages. I loved the diverse themes, writing styles, influences and characters in these stories.
.
My fave stories are:
Swiddenworld: Selected Correspondence with Tabatha Gotlieb-Ryder by Jean Marc Ah-Sen which is an epistolary story that invites the reader to fill in the gaps. I loved the shock after characters meet and how the passage of time is revealed.
.
Portland, Oregon by Casey Plett was previously published in A Safe Girl to Love which is a book that I read last year and loved!! I loved reading this story again. It’s about a woman and her talking cat and Plett is a master of short fiction.
.
California Underwater by Cason Sharpe is set in Toronto and pure Canadiana. I loved all the references and it made me laugh out loud! There’s one sentence that I read several times and made me laugh every time.
.
Going Toward Gadd by John Elizabeth Stintzi introduced me to a whole new world and I loved the non binary main character who uses ze/hir/hirs pronouns. I loved how this story incorporated Instagram and Twitter. I loved to find that JES can write so diversely from novels to poetry to this great story!
.
Thank you to Vehicule Press for my gifted review copy! I just loved this book!!! It’s one of my faves of this year so far! Thank you to the editor André Forget and all the contributors!
