I expect too much from Newberys I think. It was an okay story, with okay characters and pretty good writing...but it didn't do anything to grab me and say, "You MUST share this with your students!"

Charming but not brilliant. The Newbery Medal used to be among my favorite literature awards, especially when I was going through my want-to-be-a-literary-agent-emphasis-on-children's phase. This novel, however, is not one of its shining recognitions. When set against the works of E.L. Konigsburg and Louis Sachar, this one just doesn't compare.
Cute characters, simplistic storytelling, with a touch of controversy over use of the word "scrotum", Lucky is very much a children's book and not much of an award winner.

Sometimes you need a super cute children's book to counteract stress. This is one of those books.

Other than Lucky herself, I felt that the characters were very unidimensional. I was actually disappointed in this as a Newbery book. It had all of the coming of age angst, but other than that, I'm not sue why it was chosen. I found the author's use of one character repeating history to another character just to establish back-story to be annoying. She also drops her higher power metaphor and never shares with the reader how Lucky resolves her concerns except in a lame, forced epilogue.

I know...it won the Newbery...I should have loved it...and many of my librarian colleagues did but it was just not my cup of tea and it's not because of the scrotum. Fine with the scrotum. It just wasn't one of those "I can't put it down and I talk about it with all my friends it makes me so happy!" kind of book. It was OK though and I was happy a librarian won such a prestigious award!
