This might sound weird, but there's something oddly (horribly?) refreshing about reading a story about enslaved people that isn't full of headache and woe. This is a tale of power. We follow the 5 main characters (4 of which are enslaved people with varying roles on the plantation) and learn the value they place on their positions and the power they each hold, despite not even owning their own lives. James Carnegie paints a vivid picture even with so few pages. More people need to read this!
