As sympathetic feminist critics have noted, Goblin Market is an inspired, original female reworking of the old misogynist myth of the Biblical Garden of Eden, Eve's weakness, temptation and fall, the subsequent loss of paradise, the sacrifice of a personal savior, and redemption. (Where the old myth enters its final phase, there is no redemption.)

An evocative and slightly eerie poem. It is not surprising that the poet also wrote the lyrics to 'In the Bleak Midwinter' as both works share a similar style.

Fav Part, it is the last part of the book
”For there is no friend like a sister
In calm or stormy weather
To cheer one on the tedious way
To fetch one if one goes astray
To lift one if one totters down
To strengthen whilst one stands.”
This made me cry …. 🥺🥰

I think I will be thinking about this one for a long time. An uncomfortable poem that evokes more then it initially promises, and ends quite abruptly without resolving the tension it built too.
