de Beauvoir’s writing is incredible; she’s so good at getting into the headspace she inhabited during her youth, and without judgement for her past self, and so we’re able to see her thoughts and behaviour mature as we age with her. centering the first 21 years of her life, de Beauvoir describes in detail her upbringing, and how she gradually sheds the piousness, rigid morality and conservatism imbued by her religion and class. The blurb name-drops Sartre, but don’t go into this expecting to learn much about their relationship because he’s only really involved for like 20 pages in the last book. Instead, focus is paid to de Beauvoir’s relationships with her parents, her sister and her friends, in particular Zaza, who she befriends at the age of 10. We see Zaza grow together with Simone, and the differences in their upbringing and their resulting personalities and fates become more stark as they enter womanhood, yet their bond remains strong. in many ways the “dutiful daughter” mentioned in the book’s title could also be referring to Zaza, given her prominence in this memoir. the ending almost moved me to tears.

Not bad, I just didn't care. I haven't read for this author before, so, I don't know what I was thinking reading her memoi.
If you care to known about Simone de Beauvoir know that this is a good memoir, don't mind my rating.

adulta, avrei ripresa in mano la mia infanzia e ne avrei fatto un capolavoro. mi sognavo come l'artefice esclusiva di me stessa e della mia propria apoteosi.
