I started out loving this book. The writing was beautiful and very southern and reminded me a lot of Out of Eden by John Steinback. I really enjoyed the plot. Ella is about to lose her land because her gambling husband, who has run away, mortgaged her inheritance and during the war she didn't have the money to pay it off. But when I surprise visitor comes and helps her things start to change. This storyline was great.

Where it dropped a start was when it started adding in multiple plots and didn't truly develop them well at all. It started to feel rushed. Then near the end of the book it really seemed rushed and like the last 1/4 of the book was forced and didn't really fit. It's frustrating that a book that started soooo good and I was in love ended not so great. If you have read this book I would be interested in your opinion as I am wondering if it's just me.

I really liked it. Especially loved the descriptive imagery and setting of the story. Definitely recommend for anyone to read.

2.5 stars. Decent plot but it was just completely boring. The characters weren’t relatable and the plot was slow. I like a good historical fiction and am fascinated with the Spanish influenza but I wished it were more interesting to have held my interest.

Didn't care for the writing or the characters. Just couldn't get into it.

When I first had the pleasure of hearing Michael Morris describe his new book, I was skeptical. Healers, the Garden of Eden, a man in a box, drug addicts, drunks, murder, magic waters, conspiracies....I thought "How in the world is he going to pull this off"? I should kick myself. Not only does he "pull it off" but he manages to get the reader so involved in the characters and the town that I found myself thinking about the story anytime I took a break. While it was definitely hard to put the book down, the laundry doesn't wash itself. I cheered for Ella and wondered about Lanier. I wanted to give Myer Simpson a tongue lashing and I wanted to...well, what should I say about Clive Gillespie?

Ella Wallace is scrambling to keep her three sons and herself from the poorhouse after her opium-addicted husband vanishes. Morris attempts the classic Southern format ala Pat Conroy unfortunately paper thin characters and a story that should have ended 100 pages before it does makes for more Southern drawl than Southern tale.
