This collection consists of familiar stories by Hans Christian Andersen, Brothers Grimm, Charles Perrault and Jeanne-Marie leprince de Beaumont. Some of them are very different than the famous Disney versions.

Beauty and Beast's villain for example, was not a narcissistic Gaston, but Belle's very own sisters. The Little Mermaid was a story of unrequited love and silent sacrifices, not a romance between two creatures from different worlds. Snow-White had a sister by the name of Rose-Red and the bad guy was really the dwarf.

The common theme in Andersen's tales was beauty. Basically, beautiful=good, ugly=bad. Grimm's was happy endings, while Perrault's had a little element of horror and cunning. Little Tom Thumb by Perrault was very similar to Hansel and Gretel by Brothers Grimm.

I enjoyed reading these much more than I expected to. I love The Little Mermaid the most, because it's something I can truly relate to, and it's not often that I find a good unrequited love story.
