While I love Alice Hoffman, this book just didn't draw me in. I'm calling it quits here and closing the "now reading" tab because I'm not reading this book.
It's well constructed, and I could see how the book would become something I'd like, it just didn't pull me into it's narrative. Wrong time and wrong place. I may attempt reading this book again later.

A simple and sad story, really well-crafted characters. Hadn’t thought about it until this book but Hoffman writes children really well. Totally worth staying up late to finish this one!

So sad. Why must children struggle? And, why must grown-ups cheat?
We don't really know how is ends, so I will hope the family grows closer in tragedy.

This is the saddest damn book I have ever read, that is probably why I am rating it a 3, my heart is to broken to give it the stars it most likely deserves.

As I go through my rereads of all of Alice's book by publication date I find myself appreciating some books more than I did the first round. This is one of those. The ending was still abrupt, but this time around I find it oddly perfect whereas last time I felt jyped out of a resolution. There is no resolution for a story like this.

When I read this shortly after it came out, I thought this was good, if sombre. It would most likely read as fairly dated now.

Only for Alice Hoffman will I willingly read a book I know will absolutely destroy me
