Such a quick read! Loved this so much! Short stories are hard to write and keep you engaged and that was a very strong debut collection. Can’t wait to read more from the author.

Powerful and literary - lots of symbolism and motifs. Captures the diversity and complexity of Kenya, for sure.
Minor: Classism, Bullying, Injury/Injury detail, Racism, Toxic relationship, Xenophobia, Colonisation, Death, Sexual violence, Domestic abuse, Misogyny, Deportation, Ableism, and Adult/minor relationship

I received an advance copy of this book to preview for Better Reading. It is being promoted as a YA short story collection, but I would argue that many of the themes in the stories are more interesting to adults. I'm not sure the students at my school will go for this, but I am keen to find out, when we add it to our library.
I have long been fascinated by all things African, so I loved reading about various cultural practices, but found it a little frustrating that the stories finished as the were getting most interesting
