I absolutely adored this book. It focuses a lot on cultural worldbuilding (for the featured alien race) and friendship/found family, which I think are two of the strongest aspects of the Star Trek universe. I thought the worldbuilding was particularly well-done, and I was really drawn into/invested in the original characters and their culture.
One character could be considered a bit Mary Sue-ish, but I loved her so much that it didn't really bother me. Also, most of the original characters are women, which I thought was wonderful and really helped gender-balance the book's cast. And it takes place during a pandemic, which felt pretty appropriate at the time of reading...
