I remember casually mentioning to my husband that I'd like a book of ee cummings' poems. I imagined a thin, somewhat romantic volume. Instead I received this tome. But I'm grateful. Cummings is even better than I thought---I think his play with visuals only detracts from his power with language.

I really like Cummings. Sometimes, however, I find it difficult to decipher his poems.

You are tired,
(I think)
Of the always puzzle of living and doing;
And so am I.

Come with me, then,
And we’ll leave it far and far away —
(Only you and I, understand!)

ee cummings is by far my favorite poet, and his complete poems are definitely worth owning.

If all you can think about with cummings is his weird, experimental stuff, than you have not read enogh. He has some of the most beautiful lyric and love poetry ever written.

He also has composed some of the most powerful imagery I have ever encountered. Simply fantastic.

As you can see, it took me a while to get through this volume. Especially the beginning portion. However, so so worth it. Cummings is incredible at manipulating language and the form of traditional poetry to make it into something that's a visual and audible experience. I found that I enjoyed his later work much more than his earlier, which makes sense as you could see in the progression of poems that he was slowly but surely finding his style. Such beauty in simplicity. I took a lot from this collection.

E.E. Cummings: Complete Poems 1904-1962 by E.E. Cummings – What’s funny about this guy is that everyone in my class liked the fact that he was a punctuation rebel. By breaking the rules, he made poetry seem cool to a group of middle school kids. As an adult, I now want to shove in some periods and capitalize his name. Which I have. Right there in my review. Still a rebel lol! Happy Reading!
