I loved it. I read it through Once Upon a Book Club and they picked out some great gifts for it. This book sucked me in and I fell in love with the characters. I can't wait to read the rest of the trilogy.

The female main character is 15ish and her main love interest is 21 years old. I get that historically this was normal but it just didn’t sit right with me.

There are books that I don’t like for specific reasons, and there are books that I can recognize just aren’t for me. The Lost Queen was good enough to finish, but the main character frequently acted in ways that made no sense to me. Lots of drama and big emotions, and very little growth between marrying as a teenager and being a mother of four at age 32. The thing Pike does well, though, is to evoke the times. Interesting read, but I doubt I’ll be continuing with the series.

Well, I disliked every character. I especially didn’t like the lead female character who was too mature as a child and too immature as an adult. Furthermore, she (can’t be bothered to look up the spelling of her name) falls in love at first sight and then carries that love for 17 years despite no contact with her love and that is a trope that I can’t stand. The rest of the characters are poorly sketched—the good guys are handsome and strong or beautiful the bad guys are ugly and thin and none of them are given any sort of personal motivation in the story. Two stars is a tad too high, but that’s where I’m going to land because the author built an interesting world.
