"The roots that ground us help us soar." At the Mountain's Base is a well thought out and deeply connected picture book. Well written and illustrated.

Story could've used a bit more detail but the illustrations are beautiful.

The illustrations are beautiful, the story was interesting and so was the back story. We had a great conversation after reading it, and reflected on the meanings of the beautiful drawings.
Not for younger kids though, I'd say more the 6 and up crowd.

Really pretty illustrations and a good flow to the story, but then it just ends! I wanted more. The author’s note was nice, but wanted just a little more.

I really liked this - formatted like a real children's book with a sweet message, very simple but moving.

Super emotional, I'd suggest for kids in the 5-8 range instead of under that because they may not get the nuance.

Here is my issue with this book and the way it is tagged (and how other sites are also tagging it)
It is not until the END of the story where we truly see the homage to Cherokee culture. It is in the Author's Note and yes, we CAN imply it from the illustrations. But I think this book can pertain to any group of strong women with a family member who is serving in a war.

This is great. We need a lot more Native rep in picture books so although the poem was a little thin for a picture book story and the artwork is not my favorite, I am very happy to have this as a title I can keep on file to recommend and add to book lists.
