"They were the Rebel Gods of Heaven Falls, and their religion was sin, debauchery, and corruption...and they were worshiped as they should be."

Skater Boy was my first book by Mary Catherine Gebhard and she wooed me right of my couch while I was reading this great story. At first I kept thinking "It totally feels like I have read this before" and tried to think of a book that might have had the same or similar story line. But I came up empty. Now I keep thinking that this book was made for me to read and the feeling that I know this book already is more like a déjà vu and this totally makes me smile.

"She was spring. She was light. She was forbidden fruit I promised myself I would only taste, not bruise ore bite."

As light as this story might come across at first, this is just the surface. Beneath is so much more. Charged with troubled souls, self-doubt, insecurities, remorse emotions on every level. I enjoyed every minuted I spend with all these beautiful characters and can't wait to read more of them! I fell in love with them. No, I actually slammed.

""I'm going to put the awe back in your eyes," he said, and my breath caught. "You looked at me like I was a god once, and you'll do it again.""

Skater Boy is an exciting story about forgiveness, surviving and falling in love all the way while growing up. A fantastic introduction into the world of Patchwork House and its Rebel Gods.

"Love was messy. Love was complicated. You took a leap and you hoped you didn't slam."

Skater Boy is definitely the start to something! Patchwork House sounds like the best kind of fun. Edgy and adventurous are synonymous with Patchwork House. This merry band of misfits seems like the perfect home for anyone who feels left on the outside.

Skater Boy is the first of what I hope is a long line of stories. Starting our Rebel God line up, Skater Boy is an unrequited, taboo-esque love story. Flip and Tweetie make you crazy with their behavior. It's Mary Catherine Gebhard's mission to drive you nuts. Secrets and lies form a precarious house of cards that are the foundation for their relationship and when it falls...it slams.

This is my first read from this author and what really drew me in actually was the blurb. I read it and I was possessed with the need to read this. The promise of a story of a lone skater girl in a boy dominated world, labeled as rebels, was just too much for me to resist. So, I went ahead, dive right in and lose myself to this amazing alternate world.

The story was set in 1989 which for me I’d like to consider as the 90s already. Now, we know during those years that there weren’t many female skateboarders, actually until now it was mostly boys still. There were a lot in those years that I really like. I don't know why but mostly while reading this I can't help but hear Avril Lavigne's song Skater boy in my head. I guess, the book does give this kind of vibe.

Skater Boy tells the story of Tweetie and Flip, who met again after long years of being out of the Patchwork House, a place for the delinquents of their society. It was mostly told in dual POV and there were flashbacks to their younger years that majorly play big vital role in the story.

I like Tweetie and given how her life was turned upside down, she grew up pretty cool. A bit tomboyish but still a female who searched for that mystery boy she met; the one who taught her skateboarding. Flip is not your typical rebel/ bad boy. I was surprised by the depth of his character and how far he would go for the girl that he loves. That was just plain romantic. They just don’t make this kind of boy anymore at this time, in my opinion LOL. I have enjoyed the slow burn of their romance and it was definitely squeal worthy moments.

The secondary characters of the story are also to watch out for. I’m intrigue by King’s past, by Daniel’s silent ways and Romeo’s Casanova persona. I’ll be waiting (im)patiently for the next book to come out of this Patchwork House world.

This book took me quite a while to get into. The author’s writing style wasn’t something I was used to. Even from the very beginning, I felt like I was missing pieces and the story didn’t quite flow well. It took me 9 chapters for the pieces to click, and then it was excellent!

The premise of this book really caught my eye. It was so different from what I’ve been reading lately and needed something outside the box. That is exactly what I got with Skater Boy. This was the first book I’ve read by this author and I’m looking forward to seeing what else this series has to offer in the future.

What was a rocky start turned into a really good story. With memorable characters and a unique storyline.

I wanted to love this book, but couldn’t. It was a YA book with a bunch of 20-somethings. I didn’t feel any of the relationship building-any of the friendships or love interests.

From the start I enjoyed this book because it was different from other books I have read before. The storyline was unique and that is what I truly loved. Tweetie is an awesome character that is trying to become a professional female skateboarder and trying to find her place and the one person she wants to be with. Flip was a famous skateboarder and tragedy happened so he sticks to the shadows trying to protect others. There are secrets being held and Tweetie and Flip try to form a relationship but they are both so stubborn so it takes some time. Not to spoil anything Ill just say this is a great read and it is very unique.

So good.

Flip and Tweetie’s story was intense and angsty and full of emotion. I can’t wait to read more of this series.

I liked this book once I got a little deeper into it. When I first started it I wondered if I missed a book before this. I felt I was missing parts of the story. However as the book went on I got my answers. I stuck with it and waited and it was worth it. This was an interesting book with off the charts chemistry.
This book is told in dual pov, and it keeps you reading. The only part I didn't like was the very beginning, not feeling like I knew what was going on, there is normally some sort of background to start. You have to give the author props for thinking outside the box.

This was my first book by this author. And it was different. Not bad different, but not what I was expecting when I signed up for it.

It was a little bit confusing in the beginning, as you don’t really know what’s going on. But the more you read, the more you get the picture.

The book plays in the 80es, but it’s not really old school I’d say. A lot of things where different in these days, so probably young people won’t get it, or don’t understand the behavior, the actions. Probably!

Flip is a great skateboarder 🛹, with no parents, and is living in a house (Patchwork house) with his 3 best friends. Patchwork House is like a group home, but no officials. Founded by these 4 young boys / men.

Tweetie is a girl, raised by 3 of them in that house.

There are a lot of secrets around, and bit by bit you get the whole story. It’s not revealed in one big bam, tiny little pieces come out every now and then.

This story has a lot of feelings in it. It’s well written, interesting, slow (burn). A lot of sadness in it too. Yearning. Hurt.

I am really interested in how the next books in this series play out!!!

I kindly received an arc for an honest review.

MCG is a new to me author so I went into Skater boy not really knowing what to expect.. and I wasn’t disappointed! The story between Tweetie and her Rebel Gods kept me on edge to see it play out. I’m excited to see how this series continues and how the stories unfold. I have so many questions about the guys!!
The nostalgia it brings back for me really made me happy. I’ve always loved all things skateboarding. It was so great to read this story!
