starting this year exactly how i ended the last one: being down bad for a man who doesn’t know i exist.

i read this because joseph quinn said it was his favourite play…. it’s not something i ever would have picked up on my own and literally all of it went over my head (googling the meaning as a i type this) but i do always enjoy reading outside my comfort zone and the end of act two really got to me and made me cry so thanks joe :)

The Caretaker is a tragicomedy exploring the dynamics and interactions between two brothers and a tramp in a single location. Power relations are exposed to the audience, and the characters are laid bare before us. In places, the work is reminiscent of Beckett’s Waiting for Godot, showing glimpses of the absurd, and occasionally, the work almost slips into farce, particularly a scene involving the passing of a bag. None of the three characters effectively communicate with one another, and so all are isolated through this and their attempts at deception. Everything becomes ambiguous and fluid. While not my favourite of Pinter’s plays, the claustrophobic setting of the piece and the little deceptions of the between the three men ensure it is memorable, with all of Pinter's usual techniques and charm.
