The Bookworm Crush by Lisa Brown Roberts

What a disappointment! I really enjoyed the replacement crush but the fun writing and chemistry of that book is totally absent here. I blame the editor because I've read enough of Roberts' books to know what she is capable of.

First of all, I find it annoying when authors decide to do spin offs and then refer to the original book incessantly—which is precisely what Roberts does here. I prefer that the spin-off be able to stand alone entirely. This is one thing the editor should have helped with as I'm pretty sure this is Roberts' first spin-off.

Secondly, the writing was really awkward— perhaps because of the above?—and not very realistic. I'm sorry, but who pushes romance books on their surfer crush? That just seems like a kiss of death socially and romantically.

Thirdly, the main character seemed pretty flat—basically she is insecure and likes romance books. Oh and she knits.

Fourthly, Toff's feelings about his dad's engagement seemed a bit of a forced plot device. In the first book Toff seemed pretty cool with the relationship and I'm not saying it might not be a little stressful with getting a classmate as a step-sibling but it just seemed a little too contrived and not very natural to Toff.

There's more, but just like I had to stop reading it I have to stop this review. Just too frustrating!

What could have been a pretty entertaining YA romance was made a bit jarring with pretty explicit sexual content. I don’t like spice in my YA. As a teacher and parent, I’m not interested in picturing minors having sex, even though I’m aware a lot of them are having it. I don’t have any issues with mature readers choosing adult content if they’re ready for it, but I would be frustrated to find this in my high school library.

The story was cute with only a few issues and I liked the characters. The narrator was also really engaging. I wish I could have enjoyed it more.

Put the slooooowwwwww in slow burn. I nearly Dnf’d as the pace was borderline insufferable. The last third of the book saved it - just.

I had hopes for this one y'all. The opening was cute and but constant reference towards books (I love that, but this was too much) and zero chemistry between Amy and Toff, it just fell so flat.

I grabbed this on Audible since it was included. I didn't look at a description, rating or anything before beginning to listen to this one.

Amy McIntyre is a bookworm and excited about competing for a chance to interview her favorite romance author. She's nerdy and shy and the polar opposite of her crush, Toff, local surfer celebrity. They're friends but he has no idea he's her crush. He's a player though and she knows she shouldn't crush on him, but he would be the perfect swaggering coach to build her confidence for the competition. But can she keep her feelings to herself?

I had no idea this was YA going in and I'm not usually a big YA fan. The narration was mildly annoying. The lack of maturity was very clear and drove me nuts. It's just not for me.
