So the story started off a little slow for me. The story is interesting and catches your attention though. There are moments that were a little intense and hard to read such as the violence against the slaves. I put the book down with every intention not to finish it after the 4 chapter but after about a week I decided to give it a go again and I’m glad I finished it. I really liked Philip, Reenie & Sweets. Loved Mawu. She was so feisty. Now Lizzie…bruh! She drove me crazy. She was so delusional. And the cold part is in my opinion she thought she was better than the other slaves bc her master “loved” her and she “loved” him. She was not a good friend to the women or Philip either. She really made me mad throughout this book and I’m not sure if that was the author’s intention. But Lizzie was uppity, thought too highly and too low of herself of that makes sense and she was just too dumb for her own good. She took pleasure in knowing or being able to do something others couldn’t. She just wasn’t a very likable character to me. But I liked the story and I gave it 4/5 stars just because it moved too slowly for me.

Pre-civil war story of four enslaved women brought to a "resort" as mistresses to white men.  There is the opportunity for escape but this means leaving children, families, and, for some, the emotional ties they have to their masters and lifestyles.  The stories are sad and heart wrenching though courageous and "complicated."

I was not enjoying the beginning of this book because of how hard of a subject it was. But as the friendship between the women emerged, I began to enjoy it much more. This is a difficult read that is heart-wrenching and sad. But the way these women had to navigate to survive is fascinating and there are many lessons to learn here. I ended up really liking it and I’m glad I read it.
