Based on a true story which would in this day and age have CPS knocking on your door. The afterward says it best.

While chasing May's story, I discovered details about Idaho in the early twentieth century and about postal history, including mail by rail. However, I discovered that the most important detail has nothing to do with railway schedules or postal rates, but rather with the wonderful, creative ways in which ordinary people solve difficult problems.

Very interesting children's book about how May was able to visit her Grandmother

I think I read this in the past. It's a beautifully illustrated telling of how a little girl was "mailed" across country as a "baby chick".

The people in the story were all very kind, and again, the artwork is gorgeous.

Picture book from The Read-Aloud Handbook. Based on a true story of a little girl, May, mailed to her grandmother. Cute.

May can't afford to take the train to visit Grandma, so her father checks the regulations of parcel post and realizes that it would technically be legal to ship her as a package! It works--true story. Very cute.

I really enjoyed the watercolors and the story was fun and cute - though I'm still pretty sure the trip to "research" the story was a bit of a junket. The story is simple without much deep detail, but it would be perfect for youngsters - it's almost like the Polar Express to grandma's house in terms of the quiet wonder - just without the racket of all those other kids - just a girl and her uncle on an adventure.

This is based on a true story and has wonderful watercolor paintings, so it was a delight to go along for the ride.

I had heard about children being sent through the mail and this book was suggested reading on the topic. The book has nice artwork and presents the story from the point of view of May, a 5 year old girl. I like that this is a true story and that it has a little blurb at the end telling a bit more (though I would have liked the blurb to be a little more.)
