I find the pacing slower compared to contemporary thrillers but the structure of the novel, divided into three acts like a play, is both clever and fitting, as the story revolves around a series of murders that occur at social gatherings.

‘Murder is monstrous, mademoiselle,’ said Poirot.’

This months read for readchristie2024 is the final thirties book choice and I’ve chosen Three Act Tragedy.
Featuring our old pal Hercule Poirot, invited to Sir Charles Cartwrights party along with a few others; Mr Satterthwaite, Egg and the Reverend Stephen Babbington. There are cocktails and drama for the Rev ends up dead.
At first Poirot does not believe it is murder but he is wrong! Then unfolds  further two acts and we follow Cartwright, Satterthwaite and Egg as they investigate.
It’s a deftly plotted drama that certainly has you wondering about motive and the killer. As I had seen this one previously, I knew who that killer was but it was great fun to read and try and spot the clues. I was just a little disappointed that Poirot wasn’t in it a lot. It certainly came alive and zinged at the end when he does his reveal!

‘A tragedy in three acts - and now the curtain has fallen.’

Next month we hit the forties and a few books I don’t think I have read before remember to choose from.

I GUESSED THE KILLER!!

So, this is obviously my absolutely favorite Hercule Poirot novel, since I was such a genius that I solved the crime before the chapters got into double digits. I couldn't guess the motive, but I knew who did it, how said person did it, and other specifics of the crime fairly early on! Christie had me second-guessing myself about half way through, but I stuck with my own detecting skills and was richly rewarded at the end. figuratively of course.

You know, it's really not from being so smart; it's from reading so many Poirot books, and so many in a row. I'm going to take a break to enjoy my success since I know that I won't get so lucky the next time.
