This is a really great book, particularly if you have an interest in global health.

Interesting book portraying the life of Dr. Paul Farmer, Harvard Med grad with a mission to protect the poor of the world from wretched diseases such as tuberculosis. While insightful, the book included much more details of Dr. Farmer's business/political life than I anticipated. Personally, Mountains Beyond Mountains would have been more enjoyable with a greater emphasis on patient narratives.

A truly inspiring story, the type that makes you think about changing all your plans for your life and serving others, or at least seeing what you can do to help others who are already around you. Well researched, and not fully unbiased but a beautiful biography all the same. A story ostensibly about one man, but truly about an organization, a country, an illness, and steps that have been taken to change healthcare altogether.

I listened to the Young adult version on audiobook because that's what my library had, but I'm sure the main difference was just cutting out sections. I'd like to listen to/read the full version someday.

Mountains beyond mountains primarily expanded my horizons on disparities in health care and challenged me to believe in (and work for) better, more equitable care. I especially enjoyed the reflections on Farmer's character and drives, but felt the book got mired down in trying to share a full accounting of his life and I was often bored by focus on his past, romantic life, or political endeavors. But, that is not to say these sections were bad. Perhaps it is simply most fair to say non-fiction is not my ideal genre.

I read this during my 3rd year of physical therapy grad school. Had it been the first year or undergrad, I may have changed to medschool.

Very inspirational reading!

This is by far the best book I read in 2007. I don't usually like non-fiction but this was easy to read, moving, powerful and educational. I highly recommend this one!

Interesting overview of several large and impactful community health/disease control projects, still had a nice narrative structure which made it a quick read
