Read mostly because I have a soft spot for the musical based on this work - cute apart from the racial slurs.  I'm very aware that it's of a time, but it's definitely not comfy to read.

5 stars for cats and whimsy. Minus 2.5 stars for overt racism. It was so delightful until it wasn’t….

This illustrated edition by Axel Scheffler is charming. I thought the poems were cute and it's obvious Eliot was familiar with and enjoyed cats.

Please note that there are old racial/cultural terms used that will need some contextual discussion if reading with children.

Not my favorite mode for Eliot, I have to say. I much prefer him being apocalyptic and gloom-and-doomy as opposed to twee. Perhaps I’d feel differently if I’d read this as a child, but I didn’t—I read “The Journey of the Magi”—so there you go.
