I feel like this book probably deserves more due than I have given it, and yet, I just wasn’t impressed. It had its moments like the interrogation of Rubashov by Gletkin which would make for an outstanding film noir type scene, and the exercise yard in the snow which has many cinematic possibilities. But the preponderance of communist party treatises…it just goes on and on, and not in a leading or exciting way.

Would have been better as a play. I liked how heady this was but it took me forever to read even by my standards.
