These are fun little reads. I love the pop culture references. In this one Jade has trouble from two different fronts. She is getting stronger and a little bag a**. She is also learning to trust that her friends will be there for her.
Spoiler her secret is revealed so now the town knows that she is a scorceress. She is going to have to prove herself in the up coming book because the town is not happy. I can't figure out if she knows that her nemesis is sending big baddies to wear her down or not. These books don't leave huge cliff hangers but just enough to bring you back for more. At this point I really want to know who her dad is and....dragons?

Let's hear it for independent publishers and let's hear it for writers who get better and not worse from book to book. Specifically, Pack of Lies by Annie Bellet. I thought the first book in this series was serviceable. Decent. Fun, but obviously Anne Bellett was snuggling in, and getting comfy with these characters.

Book three, Pack of Lies is an entirely different and better offering than the first two books in the series. She is happy with the personalities she has created and they just keep getting better and better. The love angle is also a whole lot more enjoyable to read and more believable. He is not some cardboard cutout but is evolving into a more fleshed-out person.  Less of a go-to hot guy and more of a person with feelings and personality.

As far as the story goes, I think Anne Bellett excels at both pushing the main story forward inches at a time while having a contained separate story arc for each book. This is no exception.

"Recovering from a broken heart and coming to terms with her family history, all sorceress Jade Crow wants is to resume running her comic book store and gaming with her friends. With a town full of strange wolf shifters, a hundred-and-fifty-year-old peace accord hanging in the balance, and the Justice who broke her heart back in her life, Jade’s plans go out the proverbial window.

Wolves are killing wolves, innocent human lives are caught in the crossfire, and not everyone in town is who they appear to be. As the bodies stack up and the doubts build, Jade and her friend's race to find the true killer. "

Talk about exciting action. Wolves, 150-year-old peace accord, and a weird baddy to deal with; this story really had it all. I totally dug it.  Plus it was short and mighty. Perfect for winding a couple of hours in the afternoon away. Check out Pack of Lies.

Make the books longer. More character development. More world development.

This series is good but has so much potential to be more. I feel like I'm reading the paranormal equivalent of a monthly Harlequin romance novel.

Still really good stuff. This book continues on the solid foundations of the previous two, supremely enjoyable with great characters to enjoy.

This was better than the second, but not as good as the first.

We spent the first half recounting what happened in the first two.
Then we spent the second, being reminded of who was what, and why.
Lacked the humour of the first, and the comedy sarcasm that made it so enjoyable.

Also lacked the strength of the first; the MF always second guessing, angst-ing, and being a bit of a drama queen, rather than the tough, snarky, awkward-leader nerd, that we so wanted to hang with.
Also of course, the whole invincible thing. I don't feel it needs to change, just, maybe take longer to heal, have more pain involved? Something to make it more of an issue.
Otherwise, why are we sending those who can die out to fight, and not just throwing her, each and every time?

I'm not sure if I will continue? I'm not willing to spend real money on the chance it will find it's way again.. But am curious about the story, and a bit like one of those naive, pathetic hopefuls, who keep going back for more, even though they know better.

Think Laurel K. Hamilton, it took me forever to own up to the truth of that porn-o-fest.

I really want to like this! There's so much to love here, it just keeps getting lost amongst the drama and waffle.
Maybe, it needs serious editing, and than filling back out with the depth and detail it hinted at in the first, and end of the third?

This was an improvement over the second book, back onto more solid ground in her home base. In this book, she lets more people into her Scooby Gang, which I think is a good thing. I still have some of the same issues (plus now she's made all the witches closed minded and therefore bad, and there are way too many different kinds of supes all thrown in the mix, but that's minor), but Jade's an interesting character, and there's interesting story telling here.

This is a slowly evolving story, with threats coming in from multiple sides. As well as allies. You learn a little more about Jade and this world the more you read. I can’t wait to see what happens next
