Ammetto che, in principio, ho avuto delle difficoltà. Le prime 100 pagine sono state ostiche, sia per i continui salti temporali che rendono la narrazione lenta e frammentata, sia per la prosa molto variopinta alla quale ho dovuto abituare occhi e orecchie (c’è un’avvertenza iniziale del traduttore molto interessante che fa luce sulla complessità della traduzione). Dopo questa prima salita, sembra quasi che la scrittura cambi registro: tutto è più scorrevole e lineare, si inizia a capire la direzione della vicenda e i salti temporali diventano più sporadici, cosa che mi ha permesso di apprezzare ogni sfumatura e la bellezza dell’intera opera, nonostante alcuni tratti siano meno coinvolgenti di altri. Sintetizzando, Grande Sertão è un romanzo di grande impatto, un inno al realismo magico e alla poesia in cui si mischiano avventura, amore, vendetta e jagunços dai soprannomi bizzarri e in cui il Sertão è grande presenza, questo favoloso altipiano brasiliano in cui vivere è davvero pericoloso e che il protagonista Riobaldo così descrive: “non c’è cosa a cui abituare gli occhi, ogni stabilità si dissolve. Quello è così. A partire dal raggiare dell’aurora, il sertão dà le vertigini. Le dimensioni. La loro anima”.

Gostaria de poder dizer a todos o quão singular este livro é, mas seria um desafio enorme.
Ler este livro é um desafio enorme.
Acredito que interrompi a leitura dele logo no início umas três vezes, simplesmente não entendia nada.
Uma coisa me deixava encucado, por todos os lugares que se vê esse livro, os elogios são gigantes, uma aclamação enorme. Pensei que preciso encarar o desafio e absorver toda essa qualidade.
Não preciso acrescentar o quanto gostei do livro e pretendo aqui deixar algumas curiosidades e dicas para quem deseja se aventurar nessa maravilha.
1. Guimarães Rosa tinha o objetivo de criar uma linguagem extremamente precisa, pense dessa forma, todas as palavras tem sentido muito literal e muito objetivo.
2. O livro é uma narração oral, quando encontrar alguma frase confusa, leia-á em voz alta e com calma, quase sempre funciona.
3. Imagine que o narrador realmente está conversando com você, contando as histórias da forma que ele as entendeu, isso também ajuda na melhor visualização.
4. Por último, desfaça seus preconceitos. O fato dessa obra conter muita aclamação e de existirem muitos artigos científicos sobre ela a torna "inalcançável" ou "excludente", não é. Simplesmente vá com calma e leia, pois, lhe garanto, uma aventura incrível está a sua espera.

Sertao is a territory of nameless harshness. It is hot and humid there. The land belongs only to the large landowners who, to defend themselves, hire formidable mercenaries, the jagunços, who employ the highest bidder. In a long monologue, without chapters and almost without dialogues, Diadorim tries to read a long journey through words and sensations, which leaves a strange torpor on the skin and the soul.
