I listened to all 25 hours of the audiobook but it seemed to take about 50 hours.
I appreciate that it was a prequel to a trilogy but it really did not need to be as long as it was.

The story and characters were Ok, although I never really understood what value Hinari, the slave added to the story.

Another review mentions the over-hyped battles where ‘armies’ of less than 100 on each side were involved. In fact the first battle involved only a few magicians and was not even a gang fight.

I am intrigued to see how the main series continues but if the books are anywhere as long as this I will not be starting them.

At first I thought this book was quite slow with all the character establishing and info dumping on the world, but, there is so much to this book. The political intrigue was brilliant. The concepts of magic and the way it is used were incredible. The character's interactions with each other and the world were something I didn't want to end.

When I get a good book I always put off reading the end because I wonder whether the world will wrap up how I want it to. The ending of this book was mind blowing. I couldn't believe the ending. I just stared at the epilogue.

I enjoyed the Dakon/Jayan/Tessia interactions. I would have loved for them to just continue their lives in this book but it was so much more. I need to read the Black Magician Trilogy. Clearly.

This is my first Trudi Canavan book and I was happy to learn that it's the prequel to the black magician trilogy which I haven't read yet and now I can read them all in sequence. It was a great read, a perfect start to my holiday, it was nice to read a stand alone book for once. I loved the characters and their relationships with each other and how they developed through the book, it did feel like a swift ending though.

This is very much written at a young adult level. It was well-written but could have used some editing to cut some length and tighten up the story. It became very repetitive and slow through the middle of the book.
